Keeping clothed in Korea

The take, pack, or give-away pile.

So, for anyone who knows me, they know that I own A LOT of stuff.  Shoes, purses and clothes are the main items that I am overstocked with.  Or, I should say, was overstocked with.  Before coming to Korea numerous friends asked, “What are you going to bring?!?!  What are you going to do with all your clothes?!?”  I feared having to pack all my things into two suitcases for a year.  I thought I would be going naked!  Well, so far I’ve kept myself clothed!

Before I left Nebraska my good friend Ria spent a lot of time going through my closet and taking things to Goodwill with me.  Bless her heart!  I had and still have a lot of clothes.  I can’t get rid of them!  I always think…what if that piece would come in perfect this one time (Not going to happen, I know.  I need to toss).  Well, with Ria’s help I pared down my closet, packed two suitcases until they threatened not to close, tried to convince Kyle to put my clothes/shoes/anything in his bag, and packed away the clothes that didn’t make the Korea cut.  My sweet sister, Christy, and her bf graciously helped me move all my stuff and put it in their storage facility (Thank you!).

Now that I’ve been in Korea for two months with only the two suitcases of clothes, I am actually starting to enjoy less clothes (in a good way, I’m not becoming a nudist).  I have been able to play mis and match with many of my clothes that i probably wouldn’t have in the past because I just would have pick something else from my closet.  I don’t have that luxury here.  I am not feeling unstylish and maybe even more stylish!  A co-worker of mine came over the other night and was shocked by the small amount of clothes I had.  She said “I thought you had tons of clothes because you wear something different everyday!”  I was flattered even though I wear the same skirt at least three times per week!  I never thought I could live with this limited of closet.  Shopping in Korea is another story and I will save that for another post but do you think you could live out a suitcase for 6 months, 3 months, or less?  Give it a try!  Pack a suitcase and only let yourself wear the clothes out of the suitcase for a week, two weeks or even a month.  You never know how stylish you could look!
